In this, the first of a series of overwrought broadsides, I suggest that the baseball shrine quietly begin to expunge its least-deserving members. Let’s start at the bottom, with 19th Century outfielder Tommy McCarthy (seen here in a souvenir postcard). If his plaque were to suddenly disappear from those hallowed walls, would anyone notice?
