The Chicago White Sox lost Mark Buehrle. They traded closer Sergio Santos for a prospect. The White Sox prepared to enter full-on rebuilding mode, and were said to be dangling starter John Danks in trade talks. Only, whoops! Hit it, Jon Heyman!

danks and white sox agree on $65M, 5-yr deal. looks like some fan had it first. lol

That “fan” is this guy, who has previously broken a small handful of White Sox transactions. Heyman’s tweet is confirmation, but that fan is building up quite the reputation.

The thing about Danks is that he was a year away from free agency. It made sense that the White Sox would think about trading him - they’re not going to contend in 2012, and he could bring back some value. But Kenny Williams did the opposite of what a lot of people thought - this isn’t the first time this has been written - and signed Danks to a long-term extension. A long-term extension that looks pretty good, to me.

Danks is 26. He’s a lefty. He’s been durable, and he’s been effective, with a career 111 ERA+, and a 112 ERA+ over the last three seasons. Though his ERA rose in 2011, it wasn’t because of any decline in ability, so he looks like a solid bet going forward. I wouldn’t ever say that $13 million a year is a bargain, but $13 million a year for John Danks? Weird, unexpected, but solid.
