Jason Marquis Signs One-Year Contract With Twins

The Minnesota Twins have signed free agent starter Jason Marquis to a one-year contract worth $3 million.

A lot of people have a type. My brother's type, for example, is tall white redheads. I can say that because he isn't going to read this. The Minnesota Twins have a type, too. The Minnesota Twins really like innings-eating starters who pitch to contact. So on Thursday, they've added another one of them, signing free agent Jason Marquis.

According to Jon Morosi, it's a one-year contract worth $3 million. There were rumors Wednesday night that the Twins and Marquis were closing in, and it wasn't like when the Marlins and Albert Pujols were said to be closing in; one figured another team wasn't going to step in and blow Marquis away. So the Twins got their man, who is a lot like so many of their other men are or have been.

Marquis will slide into the back of the Twins' rotation, as Brian Duensing is expected to shift to the bullpen. The 33-year-old righty is coming off a two-year, $15 million contract he signed with the Nationals, which didn't go so well, but Marquis has a 96 ERA+ over the past three seasons and did all right before hurting himself a year ago, so the Twins are happy to get him for pretty cheap.

Marquis' thing is allowing contact and generating enough ground balls to survive. He's an obvious kind of pitcher for Minnesota, and now he'll pitch for Minnesota. Whether he's better than, say, Anthony Swarzak, I don't know, but it is important to have depth beyond just five starters, so it's not so much about Marquis or Swarzak as it is about Marquis and Swarzak. Boy is this uninteresting. Jason Marquis is so uninteresting.

This .gif of Jason Marquis is not uninteresting, though:

I could give you an explanation, but it’s better if I don’t. That guy - he’s a Twin now!
