Top small-school CB Trumaine Johnson on ESPN tonight

So, you think college football is over until the bowl games start? As an f-bomb tossing Lee Corso might say, not so fast my friend.

The Football Championship Subdivision playoffs take the spotlight this weekend, starting tonight with Northern Iowa at Montana. One of the top players at the FCS level is Montana cornerback Trumaine Johnson.

At 6-foot-2, 204 pounds, Johnson has safety size at the cornerback position. He excels in one-on-one situations where can use his strength to redirect the receiver. He’s not a lightning fast player, so he has some limitations in that regard, but his size makes up for it.

Johnson also flashes good hands, which he should considering he’s a former wide receiver. He’s also not just a player who is a star at a lower level. Coming out of high school, Johnson was also recruited by Arizona State and California. He’s not a perfect prospect, however. There are some questions about his attitude and character. He had a run-in with the law in October and reportedly has had some academic issues.

I haven’t gotten the chance to watch Northern Iowa this season. They’re a run-heavy team so I’ll be looking at their offensive line and defensive tackle Ben Boothby. He’s undersized at 6-foot and 280 pounds, but has 16 tackles for loss this season.

This game is on at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
