Mock drafts nationwide are shoehorning Texas A&M pass rusher Von Miller into the first 10 picks. But should he be there?
Von Miller the beneficiary of the Clay Matthews effect?
Prognosticators are citing Miller’s explosive burst off the snap and a good Senior Bowl week as reasons to push him up. Mel Kiper, for instance, has Miller ranked ninth on his big board.
While I plan on moving Miller higher in my top 200 ranking following the Senior Bowl, he won’t break the top 10.
Instead, Miller seems to be the beneficiary of a strange, not-making-sense Clay Matthews effect. Observe this rough illustration explaining it (poorly):

If the
weren’t using Matthews inventively to rush the passer, would Miller be receiving this much hype? Perhaps no.Success for Matthews currently doesn’t necessarily mean future success for Miller in the NFL. But prospect stereotypes exist for a reason (mostly laziness). Until MIller proves otherwise, expect to continue seeing him in the top 10.
Notes: I am clearly not a chaos theory scholar and likely have something wrong here. Why Hulk Hogan? I don’t know either. Oh, and read my scouting report on Von Miller here.
