Rookie Brendan Steele: Tiger Woods Quit During Final Round At Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods’ intensity and focus have been a trademark throughout his career. But that same drive is being questioned after Woods on Sunday carded the worst finish he has ever had to open a PGA Tour season.

Rookie Brendan Steele, who was paired with Woods during the final round at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, told reporters that Woods checked out during the round.

“I don’t think he gave it everything today,” Steele said, according to Sports Illustrated.. “Once it started going in the wrong direction, I don’t think it had his full attention.”

Tiger ended the round at 3-over, dropping him to a T44 finish at 1-under for the tournament. Steele fared five shots better, shooting a final round 70 and ending the day at T17. Bubba Watson won the event, besting Phil Mickelson.

Woods said he was surprised at how poorly he played after the final round, while also saying he’s working on changing his swing again. “I started out hitting it pretty good out here this week. I really did,” Woods told the Associated Press after the final round. “And it progressively got worse. We have some things that we need to work on. Sean [Foley] and I have been talking about it every night. I can do it on the range, but it’s a little different when I’ve got to bring it out here.”
