Today, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will get to show his potential as a possible NFL quarterback.
The Heisman Trophy winner is holding a one-hour workout in California for the media only to show his refined mechanics.
Newton's workout isn't exactly unprecedented. Last year, quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen held their own individual workouts. The difference is that their workouts were for scouts.
That makes Newton's workout little more than a masturbatory game of catch. Newton's QB coach George Whitfield told the USA Today that the workout is intended to "differentiate himself from Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell."
Cam Newton’s assault on the NFL Draft could begin today
Whitfield worked with Ben Roethlisberger during his suspension. He’s working on Newton’s drop back and his throwing motion. What the workout will do is give Newton an out if he doesn’t want to participate in the combine or Auburn’s March pro day.
So with Newton working with one of the best quarterback gurus in the country and making it known he’s refining his technique, it’s all on the one-year star. It’ll mean a lot more if Newton looks bad than if he looks good.
