When looking at the fixture list it seems probable that Barcelona could strengthen their La Liga title credentials even more this week. They travel away to bottom-half side Sporting Gijon, while Real Madrid face a significant test against Espanyol, who look set to qualify for Europe this season. Real Madrid can’t afford to drop another point in La Liga, since it seems highly unlikely that Barcelona will drop a total of seven for the rest of the season.

While La Liga may be in a state of limbo up top, there is a lot of action elsewhere in the table. Atlético Madrid and Valencia both have a ton to play for, and they face off in the opening match of the round. Valencia are looking to solidify their top four credentials, while an under-achieving Atleti side are just looking to work their way back up into European places.
Meanwhile, two of La Liga’s other European hopefuls have tricky, but very winnable away fixtures. Athletic Bilbao go away to Mallorca on Monday, while Villarreal try to bounce back from last week’s tough loss with an away game against Deportivo La Coruña.
