Several German clubs were in action this midweek; Schalke 04 visited Valencia for their Champions League Round of 16 first leg, Stuttgart were in Lisbon to face Benfica, and Bayer Leverkusen traveled to eastern Ukraine for their clash with Metalist Kharkiv. In the Bundesliga, the re-scheduled Hamburg Derby went ahead on Wednesday.
Bundesliga, Week 23: Hamburg SV Face Nordderby Against Werder Bremen, Mainz 05 Host Bayern Munich
The teams in Europe had a mixed set of results. Schalke came from behind to draw 1-1 in Valencia thanks to a very nice finish by Raúl, Stuttgart surrendered a first-half lead against Benfica, who won the first leg 2-1, and Leverkusen rolled over Metalist with a 4-0 win that included a late pair of goals from Sidney Sam. The Hamburg Derby went St. Pauli’s way, as a second-half goal from Gerald Asamoah was enough for a vital win that pulls last season’s 2. Bundesliga runners-up further away from the relegation zone.
In the Bundesliga’s Friday kickoff, FC Nürnberg piled more trouble on Eintracht Frankfurt as three second-half goals gave FCN a 3-0 win that moved the Bavarians up to sixth place. Julian Schieber, Robert Mak, and Almog Cohen scored for Nürnberg, while Frankfurt still haven’t found the back of the net in 2011 and have dropped to twelfth place.
