Before Cecil Newton hired George Whitfield to be Cam Newton’s personal quarterback coach, he had someone else in mind.
Former NFL Pro Bowler Warren Moon advising Cam Newton
The elder Newton looked to Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon to train the Heisman Trophy winner.
As Dave Boling of the News Tribune reports today, Moon told Cecil Newton he didn’t have the time to coach Cam Newton. Instead, Moon directed them toward Whitfield. Moon also said he was “more of a consultant and advisor to the family.”
Moon isn't the only former NFL starting quarterback working with a signal caller prospect this year. As Tony Pauline reported on NFL Draft Insider, former Jets quarterback Ken O'Brien is working with Washington's Jake Locker. Unlike Moon, though, O'Brien is showing Locker how to throw the ball.
Hiring a quarterbacks coach was wise for both Locker and Newton. Both face questions about their natural throwing ability. Both have issues about accurately throwing from the pocket.
