During his meeting with the media, Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said that offensive line was one of the strengths of this year's draft.
He said the advent of the spread offense in college football has helped develop better offensive linemen.
"The spread helps because guys have to learn pass protection," Colbert said.
NFL Combine: Steelers’ Kevin Colbert on the impact of spread offense on evaluation
With quarterbacks, Colbert said that once a quarterback is set in his drop, it doesn’t matter what scheme he’s playing in. From there, it’s about being a good quarterback.
“When you look at a spread, you have to separate what a player is doing in that scheme,” Colbert said.
One negative with the spread Colbert noted is that there are less tight ends available. Because of that, teams have to look at smaller offensive linemen and bigger fullbacks to play tight end.
“If we could line everyone up in a pro scheme, it would be nice. But it’s a never going to happen,” Colbert said.
“NFL offenses aren’t spread (like in college), but that’s our problem as evaluators.”
