Obviously, anyone who has even a passing familiarity with baseball knows about the whole “best shape of his life” meme that re-emerges every spring. It’s something we hear, mock, and move on from. But Royals infielder Chris Getz gave it a new spin:

↵↵Getz enters this spring in his best shape in three years and fully primed to solidify what, for now, is a tentative hold on his job as the club’s starting second baseman.
↵↵The specificity serves to add some significance to an otherwise empty expression. Unfortunately it also causes us to wonder why Getz is in worse shape now than he was three years ago as a minor leaguer. Way to show commitment, Getz.
