The general feeling is that no team drafts and develops pass rushers better than the New York Giants.
Meeting with the media Saturday at the NFL Combine, Giants general manager Jerry Reese shed some light on what he looks for in a pass rusher.
Reese said on more than one occasion that he looks for tall players who are fast with long arms. Looking at Ne York's defensive end crop, it's easy to see all of those traits.
Your pass rush can solve a lot of problems in the linebacker corps and secondary," Reese said. "You want to be good in all three levels, but if you struggle up front (the quarterbacks) are too good at this level."
Giants GM Reese opens up about pass rushers
In regard to the 2011 NFL Draft, Reese specifically mentioned Auburn’s Nick Fairley, Alabama’s Marcell Dareus and Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers as being stand out players.
“I think there’s a couple guys at the top that really jump out as dominant players,” Reese said. “It’s hard to find big guys who can play the run and push the pocket and get in the quarterback’s face.”
The Giants may not be in the market for a pass rusher with
and
as the starters. The Giants also have Matthas Kiwanuka, who is recovering from a neck injury. Reese wasn’t sure when or if Kiwanuka will be able to play.
The team also drafted
in the first round last year. The South Florida product started the season playing special teams, but Reese said he really came along at the mid-point of the season.
“In our lineup, it’s hard to get into the game (at DE),” Reese said. “He … really has a terrific skillet. He’s really just scratched the surface of what his talent is.”
