Corey Brewer Buyout With Knicks In The Works

The New York Knicks will buy out Corey Brewer's contract, reports ESPN's Marc Stein. Brewer is in his fourth season out of Florida, and was traded to the Knicks in a three-team deal that landed Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups in Manhattan. The Minnesota Timberwolves, who made Brewer the No. 7 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft -- ahead of Joakim Noah and Thaddeus Young -- received Anthony Randolph in the swap.

Brewer is a defender only at the NBA level; his shooting is beyond atrocious (with a career True Shooting percentage of .476) and as a result, he scores far less than most utility wings. He fell behind Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson and Martell Webster in the wing rotation this season, and was cast off to New York, where the Knicks have apparently decided that Carmelo Anthony, Shawne Williams and Bill Walker are all the wing defense they need.

Brewer is on the books for $3.7 million this season, which means that any team at least that amount under the salary cap -- including the Kings and Cavaliers -- could claim Brewer off of waivers and prevent him from signing with a contender. Either way, Brewer will be a free agent next season.
