Friday Linkage

I don’t know if I’ll be doing this more than once or twice per week, because I’ve now got a spot for quick hits when I like something. But I’ve had a request for links, so here’s my first shot in this space ...

  • Phil Birnbaum’s been writing a lot about a new book about sports statistics (and he’s not the only one). I still haven’t seen the book, but the early word ‘s not been great.
  • Could it really be true? Might the NFL really -- as Jeff Passan writes -- learn something from MLB about labor relations? This is sort of for nerds only, but I know you’re out there so I’m sure you’ll enjoy Sky Kalkman’s comprehensive look at ERA estimators.
  • Baseball Happenings offers a fitting tribute to Negro Leaguer Butch McCord, who passed recently.
  • Quick Quiz: How many Great Lakes major-league tea ms are there? Six. How often do all six win on the same day? For that, you’ll have to visit the always edutaining Flip Flop Fly Ball.
  • Speaking of maps, Dave Allen’s done something interesting with US-born players’ birthplaces over time.Bruce Markusen suggests that Jim “Mudcat” Grant might be the new Buck O’Neil.
  • I would be doing you (and them) a disservice if I don’t at least mention the amazing stable of talent that Baseball Prospectus has just assembled. Just a bunch of great people and we wish them well.
