Bears could be position to take cornerback in 2011 NFL Draft

The Chicago Bears are in a circumstance unique for them this year. They actually have draft picks in the first two rounds.

In 2010 and 2009, the Bears haven't had a pick before the third round. In 2010, their first choice was Florida safety Major Wright. In 2009, it was defensive lineman/pool jumper Jarron Gilbert.

Currently, they're slated to have picks 29, 62 and 93 in the first three rounds. At least one of those picks should address the team's need at cornerback.

Chicago finished 2010 with a below-average pass defense. Its best cornerback,

Charles Tillman

is 30 and starting to show his age. Opposite Tillman is a crapshoot.
The Bears use a Cover-2 philosophy in the secondary, so the 29th pick may not be a cornerback. Instead, the Bears could use their second round pick on a player like North Carolina’s Kendric Burney.
After a good showing at the Senior Bowl, the late second is a good spot for Burney. His playing style would seamlessly transition to a cover-2 team as well.
Burney is a quick and instinctual cornerback, two traits needed in the cover-2 scheme. He’s quick to find the ball and is a solid tackler. If he were drafted by the Bears, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him push past Zack Bowman and

Tim Jennings

on the depth chart. For more on the Bears, make sure to check out Windy City Gridiron.
