Everton’s Marouane Felliani, Facing Ankle Surgery, Out For Remainder Of Premier League Season

The injury looked innocent enough, Marouane Felllaini possibly turning his ankle while trying to stay between his man and goal. The replays in weekend's Everton-Sunderland match never gave us a good idea what actually happened. One moment, Fellaini was making a typical soccer move. The next minute has was on his butt, complaining about some seemingly mysterious pain in his lower leg.

Minutes later, the tall Belgian was limping off the pitch, being replaced by Jack Rodwell. It's not bad cover for David Moyes to have, though after Tuesday's news, it's cover that's going to be tested.

Fellaini is now set to miss the rest of this season, scheduled to undergo ankle surgery Monday. While the exact prognosis for his return wasn’t shared, Moyes confirmed (via the club’s web site) that his midfield destroyer is “out for the season.”

Fellaini's injury may be the worst note from a day of bad news for the Toffees. Earlier today, Everton was eliminated from the FA Cup by second division Reading. The club also learned Tim Cahill will be out for three weeks with a foot injury.

With two of their best players hurt, Everton’s weekend victory over Sunderland is looking all the more important. It was one of the Toffees’ best performances of the season, a 2-0 win that put them five points above the drop, giving them come room for error over the season’s last 11 matches.
