With his 16-point, 21-rebound outing against the Pacers, Kevin Love has now double-doubled in 52 consecutive games, surpassing Moses Malone's record for the most in the post-merger era. Incredibly, it was the fifth time in seven games that Love went for at least 20 boards.
Love passes Moses Malone’s modern double-double streak
It's hard to put his record into context without gushing ceaselessly about him. In one year, he's gone from an up-and-coming white kid in Al Jefferson's shadow to the single greatest fantasy basketball stud in the game. In fact, it isn't just that he pulls down rebounds at a Rodman/Moses frequency -- it's that he's also a 20-point scorer, an 85% foul-shooter and a 42% three-point shooting specialist. He's such a monster on the boards that he sat out the entire fourth quarter against Indy and still wound up with 21 rebounds.
The eight other players to have recorded 50 straight double-doubles (Malone, Wilt, Russell, Elgin Baylor, Walt Bellamy, Elvin Hayes and Jerry Lucas) are all in the Hall of Fame. Wilt Chamberlain is the all-time double-double champion, with a pre-merger streak of 227 games that will never, ever be approached. But since rebounding stats in the 60’s were a little like pitching win-total stats in the early 1900’s, Love’s mark shouldn’t be immediately discounted when comparing it to Wilt’s. All the same, it’s hard to look at Love as the all-time double-double king when he’s still 175 shy of Chamberlain’s total. In fact, Chamberlain had three separate streaks of 227, 220 and 133 straight games with a double-double. Now that’s impressive.
