The BUST-O-METER is back again to break down our top 15 draft bust risks. The series of articles will look at two prospects per week breaking down why I feel they have a high potential for busting. Many factors played into my ranking including potential draft position. The draft position is very important because if they are selected high than what their production warrants it puts them at a higher likely hood of busting. These articles always bring a ton of feedback and are highly controversial which is what makes them so fun.

For a reference, I like to classify a bust as someone that doesn’t live up to their draft position. This means that if a player is selected #1 overall I expect him to be a dominate player in the league. I also take into consideration what position the player is projected to play in the NFL. For example, if someone is selected in the top 10 and is projected as a rush 3-4 linebacker I expect to see a high sack total. Of course, there are many other factors that are specific for each player so check out the rest of the article after the JUMP.

Player: Ryan Mallett

BUST-O-METER: 6 out of 10

Projected Draft Range: Mid 1st round to Mid 2nd Round

Thoughts: Mallett is one of the more controversial prospects in the 2011 NFL Draft. Many will probably argue his spot on this list suggesting he should be higher on the list. However, I feel that Mallett has a lot of talent and the potential to develop into a solid NFL quarterback. Mallett’s big arm and experience in a pro style offense will help him with his transition to the league.

While Mallett has a ton of ability several concerns have emerged in varies areas of his game. Many will reference his athletic ability where he has shown issues escaping pressure. His extremely bad 40 time have many evaluators wondering if he will be able to extend plays. Mallett has also earned a reputation for making some bad decision with the football and cracking in pressure situations. While those talks have been exaggerated there is still a reason for concern. Lastly, rumors have been swirling about possible drug use and immaturity. The talks about character red flags may be what impacts his draft stock the most.

Mallett looks to be battling for a spot in the 1st round and wherever he lands there is potential for busting. The athletic ability, decision making, and maturity concerns are legitimate worries and all could lead to a potential wasted draft pick.
