On the eve of accepting my first high school coaching position, I called the head coach I was working under to ask his advice. He sat down, looked up the district that I would be coaching in and said, “Don’t take it. You’ll never win there.”
In Florida Athletics, Public-Vs.-Private Debate Rages On
↵“Why?” I asked.
↵“Because there’s a private school who recruits in the district.”
↵Public schools and their fans often claim that private schools recuit athletes. Private schools counter that they don’t, or that the recruiting is more prevalent in public schools. In most states, it’s against association rules for school officials to encourage students to attend a school strictly for athletic reasons.
↵As I take a closer look at the makeup of the final 24 teams in Florida, I keep thinking back to that particular conversation as I read feedback on various sites and see that little has changed in the public-vs.-private debate.
↵I’m curious to see how this tournament unfolds; Especially at the 1A, 2A, and 3A levels where the field is 2/3 private schools.
