Following his second alcohol-related arrest in 14 months, Notre Dame indefinitely suspended wide receiver Michael Floyd today.
Assessing Michael Floyd’s NFL Supplemental Draft value
If his suspension is upheld, Floyd will likely enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. To do that, the NFL would need a new collective bargaining agreement by the time the draft takes place. Last year, it was on July 15.
Assuming there is a new CBA, the question becomes where Floyd would be drafted.
In January, Floyd nearly entered the 2011 NFL Draft. Floyd reportedly received a third-round grade from the NFL Draft advisory committee. It’s hard to believe that report. More likely, Floyd could have been in play for St. Louis with the 14th overall pick. At worst, he probably would have been taken in the second round.
A first-round pick being used on Floyd is a near impossibility. That hasn’t happened since 1992 when the New York Giants used a first on quarterback Dave Brown. A second-round pick hasn’t been used since 2003 when the Houston Texans put in a claim for running back Tony Hollings.
A second-round pick seems like a possibility for Floyd. On a team with questionable quarterback play in 2010, Floyd finished with 79 receptions for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns. For a point of reference, he's not quite as good as A.J. Green or Julio Jones, but better than Jon Baldwin.
