The Opening Day Paradox

While it goes without saying that Opening Day is to the baseballing calendar what New Year’s Day is to the Gregorian, it doesn’t follow that the day before Opening Day is baseball’s New Year’s Eve, bearing instead much more resemblance to Christmas Eve, defined (as both are) by eager anticipation.

↵It was this excruciating paradox — and not (as is commonly held) his discovery of multiple infinities — that led directly to the debilitating madness of Russian-born mathematician Georg Cantor.
