Wes Leonard’s Tragic Death Touches Each Of Us In Personal Ways

Wes Leonard, the Michigan high school basketball player who collapsed on court and after hitting a game-winning shot Thursday, died of an enlarged heart, or a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, a medical examiner has determined.

Leonard’s sudden death and its circumstances are heart-breaking, one of the most tragic and terrible stories ever told in high school sports.

Fennville had just beaten Grandville 57-55 to complete a 20-0 season. Leonard had been hoisted up as a hero by fans rushing the court. Soon they would be looking on in horror as medics tried to revive the senior as he lay dying on the court.

Leonard’s story is being felt nationwide. The Detroit Times reports Saturday that four Facebook pages have been established in his memory, and tear-jerking messages are pouring in from around the country.

We feel for his parents most of all.

There’s perhaps no greater pride and joy than watching a child experience a moment of a lifetime - making a winning shot to clinch a team’s unbeaten season. But Wes Leonard had only seconds to enjoy the shot of a lifetime. His parents have a lifetime to grieve an unimaginable loss.

What we learn from Leonard’s sudden passing will be different for all of us.

For me, I just know that I hugged my child a little longer and a little tighter this week.
