Nani had to leave Sunday’s North West Derby under controversial circumstances. The Manchester United winger suffered an injury in just before halftime when Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher jumped high and through his left leg. Nani initially leaped to his feet to protest to referee Phil Dowd, but shortly after calling on the official to look at his wound, Nani fell to the pitch, something that was originally through to be an exaggeration of his injury.
Nani Injury Called ‘Very Deep Gash,’ Will Be Assessed Monday
Photos circulated after the match showed skepticism was ill-placed. Manchester United confirmed that their star winger had suffered a “very deep gash” and will have to be assessed at the team’s Carrington training facility on Monday. The Portuguese attacker was stretchered from the pitch - his leg wrapped - moments before halftime, with Javier Hernández replacing him.
Manchester United lost 3-1 on Sunday, Liverpool boosted by three goals from Dirk Kuyt. The Red Devils have a week off before their next match: Arsenal, at Old Trafford on Saturday, in the FA Cup Quarterfinals.
