The BUST-O-METER is back again to break down our top 15 draft bust risks. The series of articles will look at two prospects per week breaking down why I feel they have a high potential for busting. Many factors played into my ranking including potential draft position. The draft position is very important because if they are selected high than what their production warrants it puts them at a higher likely hood of busting. These articles always bring a ton of feedback and are highly controversial which is what makes them so fun.
NFL Draft BUST-O-METER: #14 Robert Quinn
For a reference, I like to classify a bust as someone that doesn’t live up to their draft position. This means that if a player is selected #1 overall I expect him to be a dominate player in the league. I also take into consideration what position the player is projected to play in the NFL. For example, if someone is selected in the top 10 and is projected as a rush 3-4 linebacker I expect to see a high sack total. Player: Robert Quinn- DE/OLB- UNC
BUST-O-METER: 5 out of 10
Projected Draft Range:Top 10
Quinn is an extremely interesting prospect in that he brings a ton of upside. However, there are several legitimate question marks surrounding his ability to develop into a difference maker in the NFL. Quinn is a terrific athlete with the ability to bend around the corner and get after the quarterback. He possesses good balance and coordination that allow him to employ several different types of pass rush moves.
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Quinn’s draft position with some suggesting he is in the mix for the #1 overall pick. While Quinn has potential, there are a couple things that concern me and have me questioning his draft stock. Missing the entire 2010 season, Quinn has missed a lot of playing time that would have helped his development. Recent history suggests that players that miss the entire season prior to their rookie year struggle to adjust. Players like Mike Williams had a rough time recovering from the time missed. While Quinn has a ton of athletic ability he needed that extra year in college to refine his game. If you’re going to select Quinn in the top 10 you might need to be patient as he develops.
The reason Quinn missed the 2010 season is also a major concern as he violated NCAA rules regarding extra benefits. His issues were exacerbated by the fact that he wasn’t completely honest with investigators. Quinn made two poor choices and will have many wondering about his decision making and maturity. If you are going to invest a high selection on a player you want them to be committed and stay out of trouble off the field.
Overall, I think Quinn has a bright future but he is going to need time to develop. Missing an entire season off football will lead to rust and stunted development. The interview process will be key into determining if Quinn is going to be an off the field concern.
