George Karl Signs Three-Year Extension With Nuggets, According To Report

George Karl has signed a three-year contract extension with the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN's Chris Broussard. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirmed the report, and said the Nuggets have an option on a fourth season. Karl, who has fought off cancer twice in his tenure with the Nuggets and has Denver looking at a playoff berth despite the trade of Carmelo Anthony, has a career record of 1,023-698. He's No. 7 on the all-time wins list, and is No. 11 in winning percentage among coaches with at least 500 games under their belt.

Karl joined the Nuggets in the middle of the 2004-05 season, leading that version of the team on a 32-8 run into the playoffs. Denver has made the playoffs in every season since, a feat matched only by the Mavericks and Spurs. (The Lakers missed the 2004-05 playoffs, finishing No. 11 in the West.) His tenure was marked not just by raging success with Anthony, but also surprisingly good defense and potentially the best home-court advantage in the NBA.

Karl's top deputy Adrian Dantley was considered a hot coaching prospect until he was put in the tough spot of coaching the Nuggets in the playoffs last season. The Nuggets were beaten badly by the Jazz in the first-round, but the team -- despite an inactive summer -- came back strong this season. The Nuggets are 5-2 since trading Anthony.
