Things appear to be getting worse for New York Red Bulls star striker and Designated Player Thierry Henry. The Frenchman's Achilles' injury is now being dubbed as "chronic" and his status with the club is doubtful for this weekend's match with the same club that knocked the Red Bulls out of the MLS Cup Playoffs a year ago, the San Jose Earthquakes.
Thierry Henry’s Status Uncertain As Achilles’ Injury Gets Worse
Red Bulls coach Hans Backe told the New York Post today that he isn’t disappointed that Henry hasn’t been able to go as much as they would have liked so far this season.
“No; I’ve been too long in this game to know when you get the injured players and you get that kind of injuries, almost chronic Achilles injuries. I’m not getting frustrated, I just feel sorry for the player,” said Backe. But when asked if he could say it won’t hamper the French star all year, the coach couldn’t promise that.
“It’s too early to say, because we just sat down yesterday after the Philly game and talked about it that something needs to be done. I can just take it from there….We just need to sit down and talk to the trainers and see what they’re doing now. But they’ve been working the whole preseason with that.”
Henry was at practice Wednesday according to the report but left without speaking to the media. He also was seen limping around and wearing a boot on his leg.
From the sound of the injury it will continue to be a day-to-day thing with Henry. With so much invested in Henry by the Red Bulls, they have to hope this is the only thing keeping him down and that he will return to his old self once the injury heals up.
At least for the time being Backe does have a couple options to go with to replace Henry up top. With the recent addition of Dwayne De Rosario and another newcomer on the season in Luke Rodgers, the options are there for Backe. Just not the one that most fans would want to see.
