Major League Soccer has agreed to move a league game between Real Salt Lake and the Philadelphia Union to help free up some much needed space in the RSL schedule due to their bid to win the CONCACAF Champions League Final. The two clubs were scheduled to meet on April 23 at Rio Tinto Stadium but now will face-off against one another on Sept. 3. The two sides mutually agreed to move the match and the league approved the schedule change on Thursday.
Real Salt Lake Vs. Philadelphia Union Match Moved By MLS To Accomodate CCL Final
RSL will begin their bid to become the first MLS club since 2002 to capture the region’s club championship and be the first MLS side to participate in the seven-team FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled for next December in Japan. RSL will travel to Mexico to face reigning Mexican League champion Monterrey next Wednesday, April 20, in the first of the two-game, aggregate goals final. The return leg at Rio Tinto Stadium will be held on April 27.
Seeing MLS free up a date between those two games for Real Salt Lake is a positive thing. Having the full support of the league and the other clubs is a much needed thing as well. Getting a MLS side to beat a FMF team in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League is a big deal, this little extra breathing room in the schedule should help Real Salt Lake have a fighting chance at achieving that goal.
