The New York Mets are playing poorly enough to lose twice a day, even when they aren’t playing a doubleheader. When rain outs force the twin bills, though, it just makes things official. The Atlanta Braves took two games from the Mets on Saturday at Turner Field, winning the first game 4-2 and the second 4-0. New York was swept in a doubleheader for the second time in three days, and they’ve lost seven in a row.
Mets Vs. Braves: Atlanta’s Pitching Sweeps New York Under The Rug
Derek Lowe went six strong innings for the Braves in the first game, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Four Atlanta relievers combined for three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk. The Braves hit four solo home runs to account for all their scoring -- one apiece from Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman, and two from Alex Gonzalez. Jose Reyes and Willie Harris drove in the Mets' two runs.
In the second game, Jair Jurrjens’ return from the disabled list was stellar, as he went seven full innings and allowed just two hits and a walk. George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink struck out five of the Mets' last six batters in relief. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey was hit hard, giving up 11 hits and four earned runs. The Braves spaced their runs evenly, with Dan Uggla, Chipper Jones, David Ross, and Eric Hinske each providing RBI singles in different innings. Daniel Murphy’s double to lead off the sixth inning was the Mets' last hit.
The series concludes tomorrow, with Dillon Gee going for the Mets and Tommy Hanson starting for the Braves.
