Five quarterbacks haven’t been taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since 1999.
That year, Tim Couch (1, Browns), Donovan McNabb (2, Philadelphia), Akili Smith (3, Cincinnati), Daunte Culpepper (11, Minnesota) and Cade McNown (12, Chicago) all went in the first round.
It happened then partially due to extreme need. The same could happen this year because of the uncertainty of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement. The general perception is that teams will draft based more on need this year than in years past. Later-round quarterbacks may get pushed into the first 32 picks as a result.
