Rangers Activate Colby Lewis, Demote Mark Lowe

Evan Grant (via DallasNews.com):

With the Rangers needing to activate Colby Lewis from MLB-sanctioned Paternity Leave Monday, the club optioned struggling RHP Mark Lowe to Triple-A Round Rock where he will try to figure out why his 97 mph fastball isn't retiring hitters.

Lewis isn’t starting Monday, but you get just three days for paternity leave so today’s the day. And if someone has to get sent down, it’s usually going to be the guy with the 13.50 ERA. Especially considering that everyone else in the Rangers’ bullpen has pitched at least reasonably well.

Still, the notion that Lowe’s going to get things together in Round Rock seems a bit far-fetched. He’s pitched the grand total of 2-2/3 innings, and the fact that he’s given up seven hits (and four runs) is almost certainly due more to bad luck than anything else. Then again, Lowe spent most of last season on the DL, so it’s not readily apparent that he’s actually good enough to pitch in the majors right now.
