What Makes a Mock Draft Successful

The NFL Draft has become a heavily covered event with many sites completely dedicated to year round coverage. Mock drafts are a staple for NFL Draft sites as they bring a lot of controversy and discussion. However, mock drafts are rarely perfect and most are way off. Usually, this doesn’t represent the writers lack of knowledge but the fluidity of the prospect’s draft stock.

The Huddle Report has a contest that reviews mock drafts and gives a score based on accuracy. Last year our fearless leader Dan Kadar landed at #2 with a very impressive mock draft. Dan matched 11 teams to a specific player and had 27 out of the 32 first round picks. Mel Kiper Jr. feels that a successful mock draft should have 5 direct hits and 27 out of 32 first round players. Dan was well above average by Kiper’s standard.

So when viewing the many mock drafts keep in mind that what you’re looking at is not the likely result. However, the best mock drafts will have about 5-10 direct hits and the majority of 1st round players listed.

Speaking about fun with the draft, please check out a new site called First Round Exchange that is developing a fantasy game surrounding the NFL Draft. It is a very interesting and fun concept as it lets you buy player stocks and watch them rise and fall throughout the draft season. You can buy low and if your player is selected higher than expected you gain more points. I am playing and it is very addicting and fun!
