With Rangers reliever Mason Tobin hitting the DL with an elbow injury, Evan Grant has roster news:
Mason Tobin Hits DL, Brett Tomko Returns
Rangers officials confirmed Wednesday that C Taylor Teagarden is being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and that the club is purchasing the contract of RHP Brett Tomko. Tobin will be placed on the DL and LHP Michael Kirkman, who struggled badly in his first major league appearance of the season, will be sent back to Triple-A.
--snip--
Tomko will give the Rangers' depleted bullpen a little extra depth, particularly if the team needs multiple innings behind a struggling starter. The Rangers exhausted the bullpen in Tuesday's 15-4 loss to Los Angeles.
You can’t keep a good 38-year-old pitcher with a 4.65 career ERA down, that’s what I always say.
The last time we saw Brett Tomko, he was going 4-1 with a sparkling 2.95 ERA in six starts with the A’s.
That was in 2009.
You might have figured we’d see him again in 2010.
Alas, there seem to have been some issues.
Tomko started six games with Triple-A Sacramento, and posted a 7.16 ERA.
He started six games with Class A Stockton, and posted a 7.52 ERA.
He started twice in the Rookie League and fared better: 6.23 ERA.
After that, you might have figured we would never see Brett Tomko again.
Well, unless he got one more shot in Triple-A this spring and just crushed it.
He got his shot, with Triple-A Round Rock.
He’s started two games, and posted a 6.35 ERA.
Like I said, you just can’t keep a good pitcher down. At some point in the next few days, Brett Tomko is probably going to pitch for his 10th major-league team.
