The nearly unbeatable Philadelphia Phillies came into play on Wednesday having been beaten twice in a row by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers nearly made it three before the Phillies' bats came alive, and the hosts were able to avoid a sweep with a 4-3 comeback win.
Brewers Vs. Phillies: Shane Victorino Home Run Helps Philadelphia Avoid Sweep
Chris Narveson vs. Cliff Lee read like a mismatch on paper, but it was Narveson who got the better of things for a while. Lee allowed runs in the first, third and fourth while Narveson kept the Phillies off the board into the bottom of the sixth. But he couldn't protect the 3-0 lead, and with two on and one out, he surrendered a three-run homer to left off the bat of Placido Polanco. It was Polanco's second home run of the year, and while Narveson avoided further damage, the teams suddenly had a brand new ballgame on their hands.
Behind Lee, the Phillies' bullpen was stellar, and the score remained 3-3 into the bottom of the eighth when Shane Victorino stepped in against Brandon Kintzler. Victorino led off with a long fly that cleared the center field fence for his second home run of the year, pushing the Phillies up by one. Jose Contreras was subsequently able to close it out in the ninth without too much trouble, picking up his fourth save.
Lee only struck out one batter over six innings in the no-decision. Narveson fanned four in his six frames. Jonathan Lucroy ripped a solo shot in the fourth for the visitors.
The 11-6 Phillies will begin a series in San Diego on Thursday. The 9-9 Brewers will go home and face Houston on Friday.
