On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox went and got themselves shut out. Deciding a repeat performance would make it difficult to win a baseball game, they came out on Wednesday and knocked three balls out of the park en route to a 5-3 win over the Oakland A's.
Red Sox Vs. A’s: Three Home Runs Lead Boston To Victory
The homers came from Jed Lowrie, Kevin Youkilis, and J.D. Drew, with Drew and Youkilis launching solo shots and Lowrie driving in two. The Red Sox also got an RBI single from Carl Crawford, who drove in just his third run of the season.
The A's got on the board first with a home run by Coco Crisp, but then their bats went quiet while the Red Sox' bats woke up, and this was a 5-1 game going into the bottom of the eighth. That was when the A's started to threaten. Crisp hit a one-out RBI single, but the next two batters struck out with the bases loaded to end the frame. Then in the ninth, Landon Powell hit an RBI single off Jonathan Papelbon, but Josh Willingham and Cliff Pennington popped out with men on the corners to end the game. Oakland got its chances against the Boston bullpen, but couldn't get over the hump.
The teams split a two-game series, with Clay Buchholz getting the win on Wednesday despite walking four with only two strikeouts. Gio Gonzalez, meanwhile, got tagged with the loss despite walking one and fanning nine. Baseball's fair.
