Phil Mickelson Commits To Playing Wells Fargo Championship At Quail Hollow

Phil Mickelson on Wednesday committed to play in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club, marking the eighth time he’ll compete in the event. Last year, Mickelson finished second to Rory McIlroy by four strokes; he holds an event-record five top-10 finishes.

“We always are glad he chooses to come to Charlotte. He is not only one of the most talented players in the game, he is also popular among the sports fans,” Wells Fargo Championship Executive Director Kym Hougham said in a release on the tournament website.

Mickelson joins a strong field of players that already includes commitments from McIlroy, Anthony Kim, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, Davis Love III, Stewart Cink, Angel Cabrera, Paul Casey and Martin Kaymer, the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world. It’s missing the world’s most popular golfer, though, as Tiger Woods has yet to commit to the event. Woods missed the cut last season at Quail Hollow but won the event in 2007. Players have until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29 to commit to the tournament.

The Wells Fargo Championship, which runs May 5-8, will be Mickelson’s first PGA Tour event since his 27th-place finish at The Masters earlier in April.
