2011 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 56

Our annual 2011 NFL Mock Draft, with picks made by each of SB Nation’s NFL team bloggers, is in full swing. The latest pick in to the podium: the New Orleans Saints, at No. 56 overall.

David Cariello explains: After going the “Best Player Available” route and getting some much-needed help on the defensive line by drafting Muhammad Wilkerson in the first round, it’s time for the Saints to upgrade their other position of need: outside linebacker. Though listed as an inside linebacker, Sturdivant also spent significant time playing on the outside during his college career with the Tar Heels. Despite some reported minor character and injury issues, his ability to contribute on special teams will make him very attractive to Sean Payton and Gregg Williams. Plus, he’s got a cool name.

Dan Kadar reacts: The only thing to not like about Sturdivant is that he’s probably limited to a weak-side role if he’s used on the outside. He doesn’t provide much of a pass rush but should do fine covering running backs out of the back field.
