Over the next couple weeks, we’ll evaluate the best and worst top 10 picks in a 10-year span from 1999-2008. We capped this at 2008 because it’s unfair to judge first- or second-year players. Today, the pick three success.
NFL Draft successes and busts 10-year evaluation: 3rd overall success
Pick: Three overall
The player: Joe Thomas | Offensive tackle | Cleveland Browns (2007)
Andre Johnson or Calvin Johnson Larry Fitzgerald? Neither. Sure, both are special players and phenomenal athletes. Andre Johnson in particular is perhaps the best player at his position in the NFL.
It’s not often that an offensive lineman is the face of a franchise, but that’s what Thomas is for the Browns. He’s quick and agile in pass protection and a driving force in run blocking. On an often-sputtering franchise, Thomas has been someone to be proud of since his rookie year.
In that rookie year, Thomas didn’t give up a sack. It was the first of what is now four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. Thomas has also been a two-time All-Pro.
Of all the entries thus far in this series, this is probably the hardest to choose. Some will probably call me a homer for going with Thomas over a wide receiver. But I’m find with that. Of, by and for fans? I’m practicing that notion here.
