Deunta Williams 2011 NFL Draft Prospect Notes

The 2011 NFL Draft begins Thursday and the staff at Mocking the Draft is working hard to bring you the most in-depth information possible. We have spent countless hours reviewing college games in an attempt to produce scouting reports for each of the prospects. However, time is running out so we decided to release some scouting notes in order to cover a wider range of prospects.

After the jump you can check out the notes taken in order to come up with this final analysis. Be sure to check out our full scouting reports HERE.

Deunta Williams
6'1, 205 pounds | Free safety | North Carolina

Final word
: Williams was a top recruit for North Carolina and was one of the players who helped define their defense. Williams was suspended the first four games of the 2010 season following the UNC agent investigation. Still, he started 46 games for the Tar Heels at free safety. When he came back in 2010, he immediately changed the face of their defense. He's a big, physical presence in the secondary. He's very good working forward attacking the ball. He needs some work in pass coverage, though. A broken leg in North Carolina's bowl game has held him out of workouts and likely pushed his stock down.

NOTES:
• Really likes to go for the big hit, which too often causes him to miss tackles. He’s imposing in the center field, but will give secondary coaches headaches.
• Is strong against the run game. Likes to move up field and attack in the box. Shows good physical strength to take on and shed blocks.
• Struggles helping corners over the top in zone coverage. His best spot for zone is cover-4 where he’s forced to play and stay in an area. Not the best on bracket coverage.
• Possesses really good hands. Had 12 career interceptions, including six in his standout junior season. Was a high school wide receiver.
• May not have the agility and fluidity to cover wide receivers in man-to-man situations. Holds up fine, though, against tight ends.
• May have been the beneficiary of a very good secondary and front seven.
• Projects as an excellent special teams player because he’s straight line fast and locates the ball really well.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
