Philadelphia Phillies starter Roy Halladay was coming off one his worst starts in almost a year. The San Diego Padres had scored two runs over their last 30 innings. Something had to give.
Phillies Vs. Padres: Roy Halladay Performs Surgery On San Diego
So, yeah. The Padres gave. And how.
Roy Halladay matched a career high in strikeouts with 14, pitching 8-2/3 innings to win for the Phillies, who defeated the Padres 3-1 to complete a weekend sweep in San Diego. The Phillies moved to an MLB-best 15-6, while the Padres dropped to the bottom of the NL West at 8-14.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Phillies finally got to Padres starter Wade LeBlanc. The first four hitters reached for the Phillies, with Ben Francisco and John Mayberry connecting for run-scoring hits. The threat of a big inning ended with Halladay grounding into a double play. They really should look into releasing that guy.
In the seventh, the Phillies extended the lead to 3-0 after Shane Victorino drove a ball into the right-center field gap, where Will Venable dove, but couldn’t quite come up with the ball. After the ball kicked past center fielder Cameron Maybin, who was backing up on the play, Victorino zipped around for an almost-contested inside-the-park home run to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
That’s all Halladay would need, though the Padres were able to chase him from the mound in the ninth. With two outs, the Padres were able to squeak a run across, as Venable singled into center field to score Jason Bartlett. Manager Charlie Manuel pulled Halladay, who had thrown 130 pitches. Antonio Bastardo came in for the final out with the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate, and he was able to get Nick Hundley to fly out to right field.
The Padres will stay in San Diego to host the Braves, while the Phillies will travel to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks.
