Supplemental draft likely for Janoris Jenkins

Odds are that former Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins will be in the 2011 supplemental draft, should there be one.

The supplemental draft is typically held in July. If there isn’t a new collective bargaining agreement, though, the draft could be canceled.

Jenkins was kicked off Florida’s football team by coach Will Muschamp Tuesday. Jenkins was arrested on Saturday and charged with possession of marijuana. It was his second drug-related charge in three months and third during his time at Florida.

If there is no supplemental draft, Jenkins will probably enroll at a Division I-AA. If he wants to play for an FBS school, he’ll have to sit out a year.

Jenkins was close to entering the 2011 NFL Draft. Had he entered, he would have likely been rated behind Patrick Peterson, Prince Amukamara and Jimmy Smith. Jenkins had three interceptions in 2010 and eight for his career.

It’s hard to gauge Jenkins’ value in a supplemental draft. Teams typically don’t like to use a high pick on a player. It’s conceivable that a team wouldn’t higher than a third-round pick on Jenkins.

In last year's supplemental draft, seventh round picks were used on running back Harvey Unga and defensive tackle Josh Brent.
