The Chicago White Sox have famously had problems holding narrow leads so far this season, but Tuesday night, they were able to survive, beating the New York Yankees 3-2 in the Bronx.
White Sox Vs. Yankees: Brent Lillibridge Saves The Day In Narrow Chicago Victory
All of the game's late action took attention away from starters Gavin Floyd and Ivan Nova, who combined to allow three runs and nine hits over 14.1 innings of work. Floyd in particular was strong, fanning ten in eight frames.
But it was Floyd who found himself on the hook for the loss going into the top of the eighth, with the White Sox trailing 2-1. It was then that Rafael Soriano made his latest ugly appearance. With one down, Soriano hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch, and the next batter - Paul Konerko - sent a screamer into left for a two-run homer that gave Chicago the lead.
Soriano stopped the bleeding there, but the damage had been done, and this remained a 3-2 game in the bottom of the ninth. Floyd allowed a leadoff single to Derek Jeter before he was replaced by Matt Thornton, who got a sac bunt from Curtis Granderson before walking Mark Teixeira to put the winning run on base.
Then came the heroics. Sergio Santos came on to relieve Thornton, and he allowed Alex Rodriguez to hit a line drive deep to right that reserve Brent Lillibridge flagged down against the wall for the second out. Robinson Cano then came up and hit a line drive to right of his own, but Lillibridge sprinted in and to his left, making a diving catch for the final out. Lillibridge pounded the ground before getting up to celebrate with his teammates.
The previously slumping White Sox hung on to win the first two games of a four-game series in New York. On Wednesday, they'll turn to Mark Buehrle, while the Yankees will hand the ball to Bartolo Colon.
