NFL Draft 2011: CB Jimmy Smith, Colorado
Cornerback | 6’2”, 211 pounds | Colorado
Defensive scheme: Shut down cornerback. Played in a man scheme almost exclusively. Colorado’s defense kept him on a specific side of the field as opposed to a specific receiver (i.e. the game against Georgia and AJ Green). Smith was only thrown on about 20 times his senior year and only allowed a single touchdown, even with a future NFL corner patrolling the other side.
A story you may not know about him: Jimmy had one of the best plays of his career saving a touchdown after a busted assignment from another member of the Colorado secondary. Smith chased down Hawaii wide receiver Kealoha Pilares from at least 20 yards behind on an 80 yard reception, stopping him about 10 yards short of the end zone. The Rainbow Warriors failed to score any points and the drive and the Buffs came from behind to win the game. Smith showed great pursuit angles and ridiculous speed to stop the touchdown.
Comparable to which NFL player: His now famous quote notwithstanding, many have accurately compared Smith to Nnamdi Asomugha.
