Going into the draft, there was an absolute certainty: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would take a defensive end.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers take Adrian Clayborn 20th in 2011 NFL Draft
In mock drafts, no one had Da’Quan Bowers still there. He was and Tampa Bay didn’t care. Instead, the Buccaneers took Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn. Before the 2010 season, Clayborn was considered a top 20 pick and the Buccaneers proved as much.
How smart it was, I’m not sure. There’s nothing that Clayborn can do that Bowers can’t do better. One big positive for Clayborn is that he’s a big, mean defensive end. Last year, Tampa took defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and Brian Price. Neither has a lot of nastiness in them, so Clayborn could rub off and help give their defensive and identity.
