The Toronto Blue Jays executed a rare double-demotion on Thursday, sending 35-year-old utility infielder Chris Woodward and, far more surprisingly, 23-year-old left fielder Travis Snider to AAA Las Vegas.
Travis Snider, Chris Woodward Demoted By Blue Jays
Woodward was called up when Aaron Hill went on the disabled list, so it’s mildly surprising that we was sent back a week before Hill is eligible to come off the DL, but it’s a stunner that the Blue Jays are showing tough love to Snider, their former first-round pick.
Snider was hitting .181/.277/.265 with 22 strikeouts in 83 at-bats. He did, however, post OPS+ of 95 and 106 over the past two seasons -- not good for a corner outfielder, but impressive enough for a 21- and 22-year-old. Those seasons were plagued by wrist and torso injuries, and the Blue Jays were hopeful that he could break through this season.
After 24 games, though, there was something the Blue Jays felt couldn’t be fixed in the majors, and Snider will go down to AAA -- a level for which he’s not old at all, it should be noted.
The moves likely mean that Rajai Davis is about to return from the DL.
