The 1st round was full of surprises especially when it comes to the quarterback selections. The 1st round quarterback selections included Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Christian Ponder, and Blaine Gabbert. Other than the Newton selection, I was surprised to see where each player landed
Day Two Could See Another Run on Quarterbacks
Ponder was getting some 1st round buzz but not many expected him to go #12. He will likely be asked to contribute early with a lot of pressure on his shoulders. The Vikings are a veteran team that have aspirations of returning to the playoffs and making a run. In my opinion, Ponder is the most NFL ready quarterback so the selection makes some sense.
The Locker selection was also a surprise because many had him pegged as a mid to late 1st round selection. Locker has a ton of upside but will need time in order to improve and make an impact. His biggest problem area is his accuracy which will need to improve if he wants to be a successful quarterback.
The 2nd round could see as many as 3 quarterbacks selected with Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton, and Colin Kaepernick all still on the board. There are several teams that still would like to address the position which means we could see some trades and an early run.
A lot of franchises are relying on this quarterback class which will likely shape future of many teams. However, it is likely we won’t see any real impact out of this class for a few years because of the need for development.
