To start their national semifinal game in the 2011 Women’s Final Four, Stanford played poorly, allowing their opponents Texas A&M to get out to a lead. They were so poor in the opening part of the second half that their coach, Tara VanDerveer, exclaimed “You couldn’t be playing any worse right now” during a media timeout. At that point, with the score sitting 19-12 in the favor of the Aggies, the Cardinal woke up, started shooting well and stopped turning the ball over. They ramped up their defense as well, and as a result, they lead by a score of 27-23 at halftime.
Women’s Final Four 2011: Stanford Leads Texas A&M After Slow Start By A Score Of 27-23
Star guard Jeanette Pohlen is struggling for the Cardinal, as she’s turned the ball over five times. Stanford were brought into the game from behind by Nnemkadi Ogwumike, who has 16 points. Texas A&M have been very strong on defense, but they’re lacking the offensive firepower that Stanford has. If they want to regain the lead, they’ll likely have to do it by regaining their defensive form.
