Report: Janoris Jenkins transferring to North Alabama

According to Josh Buchanan of JBScouting.com, former Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins is transferring to North Alabama. He is awaiting NCAA approval.

Jenkins was kicked off the Florida football team in April by new head coach Will Muschamp. He was arrested earlier in the month and charged with possession of marijuana. It was his second drug-related charge in three months and third time while he was at UF.

Jenkins was close to entering the 2011 NFL Draft. Had he entered, he would have likely been rated behind Patrick Peterson, Prince Amukamara and Jimmy Smith. Jenkins had three interceptions in 2010 and eight for his career.

North Alabama hasn’t had a player taken in the NFL Draft since 1999 when tight end Bobby Collins was taken by the Bills in the fourth round and defensive back Tyrone Bell was picked by the Chargers in the sixth round.

If Jenkins plays up to his potential and has no more drug issues, he should get drafted long before Collins and Bell.

Muschamp recently danced around the notion of there being a marijuana problem with Florida. In addition to Jenkins, linebackers Chris Martin and Kedric Johnson received misdemeanor drug charges this year. Former offensive lineman Maurice Hurt reportedly tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine this year. Former Gators stars Percy Harvin and Aaron Hernandez have also failed drug test due to marijuana usage, according to ESPN.
