YouTube Channel 2012 Prospect Video Breakdown - Iowa OT Riley Reiff

We've come to a very slow period in the football calender, made infinitely slower by the lock out, where no football is being played. Even spring football is is complete. For us here at Mocking the Draft, that just means extra time to look at 2012 prospects. Thanks to our growing collection of game film over at our YouTube Channel, we are going to start a feature where we take a closer look at how prospects for 2012 performed this past season and how we use the tape to take notes. To start it off we are going to take a look at Iowa #77 LT Riley Reiff (#35 on Mocking the Draft's 2012 prospect list, #4 OT) in the Insight.com Bowl.

One of the reasons for using this particular tape is because there are plenty of opportunities For Reiff to go up against the number 7 overall draft pick, Aldon Smith. Whenever possible, its best to watch prospects when they go up against other top prospects one-on-one to see how they match up. It makes it easier to judge thinks like athletic skills and technique. When going up against other top prospects they're more likely to have their skills tested and pushed to their limits.

We’re also going to be looking at each part of his game from picking up blocking assignments, push in the run game, blocking technique, and athletic ability. Coming up are our notes from the game. Feel free to leave your observations and check out all the 2012 prospects from our videos at Mocking the Draft’s Prospect Video Library.

  • Between the 20's, Iowa tends to run away from Reiff and have him wall off the back side. His defender never makes the play, but he rarely finishes the block.
  • Once in the red zone though, Iowa adds a TE next to Reiff and run behind them
  • Reiff moves well and pulls on quite a few plays.
  • Is slow off the ball. Routinely one of the last lineman on both sides of the ball to move after the snap.
  • Struggles with power rushes. More often then not, when a rusher comes downhill at him, he gives ground. Doesn't give up on the block, but is consistently pushed back and doesn't anchor after contact.
  • While he gave ground to bull rushes, he doesn't give up any sacks and stays locked onto his man.
  • Gives up on QB pressure against Aldon Smith, but that pressure leads to an INT
  • Did well at picking up stunts and blitzes

Overall this was a pretty average game for Reiff, but you can see his upside for next year as well. Has good size at 6’6” 300lbs and has the time and frame to add more strength. His anchoring and bending need work, but if there is one thing that Iowa has done well over the years is develop offensive lineman. Should be fun to watch as he goes through the 2011-2012 season.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.
