Indy 500 Lineup Preview: Qualifying Weekend’s Winners And Losers

With Indy 500 qualifying in the books and the full Indianapolis Motor Speedway field on display, it’s time to evaluate which racers and teams came out ahead, and who’s staring up at longer odds than they were before the weekend.

Pop Off Valve, SB Nation’s IndyCar community, thinks Alex Lloyd, Paul Tracy and Simona de Silvestro acquitted themselves well, along with pole-holder Alex Tagliani of course. On the other side of the ledger, Dragon Racing, Andretti Autosport, Team Penske and Target Chip Ganassi Racing produced the week’s biggest disappointments.

The last entry on the FTL list might be the most FTL of all -- both Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon ran out of fuel during qualifying. Including the right amount of fuel in an IndyCar is a specific challenge, as too much will only slow down a vehicle, but using too little twice in one weekend is a tough feat to reproduce.

For more on the race, stay with our 2011 Indy 500 StoryStream. Be sure to head over to Pop Off Valve for all things IndyCar, including the three excellent Indy 500 resources: The Indy 500 experience, Indy 500 traditions and the history of the Indy 500 and the Brickyard.
